Don’t forget to pay attention to the length, elevation change, and mileage.

WARNING: It’s a lot easier to go down than up!

Plan on the climb out taking about twice as long as the hike down. Do not try to hike to the river and back in one day.

Know the numbers

Distances are one way. Every foot you drop is a foot you climb back up, at 7,000 feet of elevation and often in the heat.

  • South Rim

    South Kaibab Trail

    Steep ridgeline trail with huge open views and almost no shade.

    There's no water on this trail. Carry all of it.

    Bright Angel Trail

    The park's most popular trail, with rest houses and seasonal water.

    Most day hikers should turn around at 1.5-Mile or 3-Mile Resthouse.

  • North Rim

    Strenuous

    North Kaibab Trail

    The only maintained trail from the North Rim, through forest and side canyons.
